Lee Friedlander
Still Life Part II.

Friedlander fans, you’re in for something different. Along with the more typical Lee Friedlander street observations–store window reflections«– this exhibition lives up to its still life billing and takes us much closer to home, although it’s hard to tell if it’s Friedlander’s home. Many of the images are of Friedlander’s immediate surroundings indoors, perhaps the result of his growing physical limitations. They are compelling in their own right, with close-ups of shelves filled with books and family photos in front, including one of three people on Pennsylvania Avenue...could that be President Clinton on the end? Another hard to forget photograph contains more books, old photos and in the foreground, a pack of “Brooklyn” chewing gum. The show also includes recent images of flowers, place settings and shadows—and at least one has the Lee Friedlander mark—his shadow — a reminder that he is here or was there. Depending how you look at it. Most images priced at $7400.
