The photographs in Olaf Breuning’s current exhibit at Metro Pictures do not seek to fool the eye. Rather, each model is presented close to life-sized, posed against a solid black background, and painted to signify various artists. Except for Man Ray and Jean Michel, each piece is titled with part of an artist’s name to help guide the viewer in identifying the referenced artist. This is fine for Edvard (the Scream), Vincent (starry sky), Jasper (American flag) and Andy (Silver Factory and banana skins) though not as obvious with a number of other pieces. (I admit freely that I am not conversant with the work of all the artists referenced.)

Some of the photographs are well imagined and executed, working as standalone images whether or not one is familiar with the artist. I particularly enjoyed Yves, Andy, Joseph, Pollock and Richard. Others exhibit some crudely executed aspects (cracks in the body paint, the distorted hands of Edvard and Paul) I generally found less successful.

One of the things I look for in photographs of people is their eyes. In this series, however, the model’s eyes were often closed, the eyelids being part of the painting. In several the model looked out at the viewer with various emotions (somewhat confrontational in Francis; resignation in Johns, almost watery in Takashi).

Other images in this series are not on display. While my normal response is to wonder what was not included, in this instance what I saw sufficed.
